Panhandle Funeral Ride

shutterstock_12913057

Tires spit gravel

pitting glass and steel

against bucking roads.

Weeds tumble

on yellow patches.

Cows swing around

tails to the wind

like weathervanes

showing change.

The new direction

squeezes hearts, while

eyes blink memories

boxed in the car.

  1. I can relate to this one, even if there’s no death involved.

    • We were on our way to a funeral that day, and I wrote what I saw along the way (my hubby was driving). Thank you for taking the time to read and comment. Have a nice day!

  2. Oh, so simple but exquisite! I loved how the raw feelings and emotions of the thought of a funeral made your senses so much more aware and attentive to what you were seeing and that you captured them so eloquently! Bravo!

    • Thank you for taking the time to read and comment. As my husband drove hours to the funeral, I wrote snippets of what I saw. On the way home, I turned them into poems. It was cathartic. Have a nice day!

  4. Wonderful image of the cows’ tails turning like weather vanes. I like hearing your back story of how this poem came into being. Thanks for visiting my blog and following.
